Masaki Iwabuchi is a NY-based Strategic Design Futurist with 20 years of experience in strategic foresight and vision creation through design artifacts. He specializes in User Experience Design, Speculative Design, and Systemic Design, crafting future scenarios and socio-technical visions through various media, including photography, writing, video, and interactive prototypes.
Since 2021, Masaki has served as a Strategic Design Futurist at JPMorgan Chase, where he leverages his strategic foresight capabilities within the financial sector. In this role, he leads the development of future scenarios and identifies potential opportunities for the organization. Additionally, he has been a Visiting Associate Professor at Tohoku University since 2021, where he researches and teaches emerging design theories to engineering students.
Masaki’s practical design theories are articulated in his first book, Social Dreaming through Design (世界観のデザイン, in Japanese). His recent accolades include the Core77 Design Awards 2020 Speculative Design Award. He has also served as a judge for prestigious design awards, including Good Living 2050, Davey Awards, and Indigo Design Awards.
Masaki holds an MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design, an MA in Interdisciplinary Information Studies from the University of Tokyo, and a BE in Information and Communication Engineering from the University of Tokyo.
My mission is blurring existing borders and cultivating pluriversal wholeness to overcome wicked problems in individual, organizational, social, and governmental levels beyond the Cartesian belief system. I use design as a critical tool for mediating different entities and creating serendipitous products, services, organizations, and visions towards humans in the future.

English introduction by Julian Bleeker's Near Future Laboratory
I’m seeking potential collaborations with publishers in the US and other countries to make this book available in English and other languages. Let’s design a better world together! If you or anyone you know might be interested in this exciting opportunity, I would love to connect!
PRESENT: To seize the future with your own hands, I begin by asking questions about the purpose of your organization or business.
PAST: Next, I excavate the Past to envision Futures, viewing the future not as a isolated single innovation, but as a continuous "flow" from the past through the present to the future.
FUTURE: Then, by materializing concrete experiences from the future, we create a shared understanding of what is happening in that world and what kind of lives are being lived there.
PRESENT: Lastly, we backcast insights from the envisioned future to our present society, we can find visionary actions toward desirable futures.
